History of Britain
The history of Britain is indeed unique. It begins with known human presence about 900,000 years ago, stretching to the Roman invasion in AD 43. The journey continues over thousands of years and tells the stories of how peoples lives were changed, the shifts in power and in religion over centuries. We are either encouraged to delve deeper, add value to our understanding of humanity, or simply to ignore the insanity because it terrifies us.
We also know, that in history, nothing was ever in a certain way for long. Events happen. They evolve. Stories are told. Sometimes in lores, sometimes in recollection, and sometimes written. Through these, hidden secrets are uncovered, mysteries behind some of the iconic sites are decoded and more ‘history’ is unearthed. To add context to the discoveries, new stories are created to be the ‘history’ for future generations to ponder.
In whichever way history affects us, there is no denying that the past shaped the countries, people and culture of today. History helps us to understand societies as we travel. Helps us to understand and uncover the mysteries of ruins, heritage sites, the monuments that stand testament to bravery and the customs of a group.

I love history and always have. I find history intriguing, gripping, and sometimes insanely unbelievable! It is both the story of an individual and the whole of humanity, that lends context to the real cause of their behaviour. Therefore, I welcome you to read the following small selection of stories on the history of Britain in the hope that it adds value to your travels when visiting some of the iconic sites in Britain.
Before you do, I share with you one of my favourite quotes on History by Sir Terry Pratchett (from “Mort”) that captures the essence of the stories of the past.
History unravels gently, like an old sweater. It has been patched and darned many times, re-knitted to suit different people, shoved in a box under the sink of censorship to be cut up for the dusters of propaganda, yet it always –eventually – manages to spring back into its old familiar shape. History has a habit of changing the people who think they are changing it. History always has a few tricks up its frayed sleeve. It’s been around a long time.
