By Car to Dune du Pilat from Bordeaux

The first train from Bordeaux to Arcachon departs St Jean station at 08:04. The last train from Arcachon to Bordeaux is at 21:05. From Arcachon to Dune du Pilat by Bus: The local bus network in Arcachon is operated by Baia. The bus leaves from Place Maydieu. A visit to Dune du Pilat is an extraordinary experience that leaves lasting memories. From climbing to the top of Dune du Pilat and looking out over the vast expanse of sand and sea to feeling the soft, warm sand beneath your feet as you walk along the ridges and explore the ever-changing patterns and textures created by the wind along with the sight of the dune against the backdrop of the sky will remain a vivid image and is truly a remarkable experience to savour.

I know I am not supposed to but I found walking on the sand better barefooted. We visited on a pleasant day and the temperature was mild. I opted for the stairs and was treated to Sauvignon Blanc when we reached the summit. It was not strenuous, just 162 steps. I stopped a couple of times to capture the vistas during the ascend. The views over Arcachon were truly remarkable. You can walk down towards the beach from the summit. Visiting the Dune du Pilat in May with my daughter was one of my life’s best experiences.
