At approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Bordeaux, the journey time is around 45 minutes. Parking areas are available near the village for visitors. Bordeaux to Saint Emilion by Train

Public transportation is easily accessible by taking a train from Bordeaux to Saint Emilion. The train journey takes about 40 minutes, with regular departures from Bordeaux Saint-Jean station.

Walk around to the Church’s cloisters and you’ll see a remarkable painting on the wall depicting the Apocalypse. This artwork was created by painter Francois Peltier and covers the entire east wall.

The central garden of the cloisters signifies the garden of Eden and the richly decorated graves date back to the 13th century.

This point effectively separates the Upper town to the Lower town as Rue de la Cadène leads to a downhill path. This spot is a delightful spot to wander.

Take a moment to observe the charming sandstone gate which stands as a symbol of a bygone era. More alluring are the timber-framed houses originating from the 16th and the last ones standing in Saint Emilion that exude a unique character and charm.

This remarkable timber-framed house that holds a special place in Saint Emilion’s architectural heritage. It is the last remaining timber-framed house in the village, boasting a facade that dates back to the early 16th century, with foundations even older.

As you observe the building, you’ll notice mullioned windows adorning its front and a turret with a small double window on its south facade, showcasing the architectural evolution of this residential complex until the 16th century.

According to my guide, mysteries linger about the house’s past. For example, the potential existence of an earlier enclosure within the city and the significance of its name, “Cadène.” Some believe the name is possibly inherited from one of its 13th-century owners, Guillaume Renaud de la Cadène.

Additionally, the intricate sculptures embellishing the lower wooden sections of the house exhibit Renaissance and Italian influences, reflecting the artistic developments of the time and potentially symbolising the importation of New World products.

This last timber-framed house serves as a captivating testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Saint Emilion,. You may, as I, be intrigued by its architectural intricacies which offer glimpses into the past through its unique features and enigmatic details. Seeing the only timber-framed house was certainly one of the highlights of my visit to Saint Emilion on this day.

The King’s Tower in Saint Emilion is a prominent historical landmark in the town. It is known as “La Tour du Roy” in French. The tower dates back to the 13th century and stands as a remnant of the medieval fortifications that once protected the town.

The Monolithic Church, also known as the Eglise Monolithe, or the Underground Church in Saint Emilion is in a cave. The church is an extraordinary architectural marvel.

What sets this church apart is its unique construction. The church is entirely carved out of a single limestone rock, and involved excavating and sculpting the stone to create various chambers, pillars, and intricate details. The Église Monolithe is the largest of its kind in Europe.

Venturing into the Monolithic Church is like stepping into a hidden world. As you descend into the depths of the church, you’ll be awestruck by the cavernous interior and the remarkable precision with which it was excavated. The atmosphere is both serene and mystical, enhanced by the soft lighting that illuminates the rock-hewn walls and the ancient stone columns that support the structure.

The church’s cavernous interior features a central nave, a choir area, and numerous chapels. Intricate stone carvings and architectural details can be found throughout, showcasing the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who created this masterpiece.

You’ll have the opportunity to sit on a fertility chair in the original cave (which, according to the tourist office, has a reputed record of subsequent births) and admire the remarkable 14th-century paintings in the Chapelle de la Trinité.

One of the most intriguing features of the Monolithic Church is the hidden cave, known as the Hermit’s Cave or the Catacombs. Accessed through a narrow passage, this hidden chamber was used by hermits seeking solitude and spiritual retreat. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the solitude and contemplative nature of religious life during medieval times.

How to Visit the Monolithic Church, Saint Emilion

You can visit the Monolithic Church only on a tour. Tours are organised by the Saint Emilion tourism board and these are available at 11:00 and 14:00 daily. These tours are led by a knowledgeable guide who is well experienced in navigating the labyrinth of passages that wind through the underground structure, connecting chambers and sections of the church.

Scheduling and tour times may vary. We discovered tours were offered at 15:00 also. Depending on the season, tours can take place either daily during peak season or restricted to a Sunday and Monday during off-season.
