Shakespeare about Milan
One of the most famous quotes attributed to Shakespeare about Milan comes from his play “The Two Gentlemen of Verona.” In Act 1, Scene 2, the character Valentine says:
“Cease to lament for that thou canst not help,
And study help for that which thou lament’st.
Time is the nurse and breeder of all good.”
This quote reflects on the idea of accepting what cannot be changed and focusing instead on finding solutions for what can be improved, with the notion that time is essential for nurturing positive outcomes. Though it doesn’t directly mention Milan, it’s spoken within the context of the play, which is set in Milan.

Hans Christian Andersen
“I went daily to the cathedral of Milan, that singular mountain which was torn out of the rocks of Carrara. I saw the church for the first time in the clear moonlight; dazzlingly white stood the upper part of it in the infinitely blue ether. Round about, wherever I looked, from every corner, upon every little tower with which the building was, as it were, overlaid, projected marble figures. Its interior dazzled me more than St. Peter’s Church; the strange gloom, the light which streamed through the painted windows, the wonderful mystical world which revealed itself here, yes, it was a church of God!” — Hans Christian Anderson

The quote is attributed to Hans Christian Andersen, a Danish author best known for his fairy tales. Andersen lived in the 19th century and is celebrated for timeless stories such as “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

He marvels at the cathedral’s white exterior glowing in the moonlight and the intricate marble figures adorning its towers. Andersen expresses awe at the cathedral’s interior, comparing it favourably to St. Peter’s Church in Rome. He is captivated by the mystical atmosphere created by the interplay of light through the stained glass windows, describing it as a divine place of worship.
