I am fortunate to have experienced the cherry blossom season in Japan when I lived in the Kyoto region. There is nothing quite like it! The delicate pink petals cascading from the trees created a breathtaking scene, painting the landscape with hues of pink and white. Walking through the streets and parks adorned with cherry blossoms felt like stepping into a dream world. Moreover, strolling along Philosopher’s Path, renowned as one of the best areas in Kyoto to witness the spring blossom, is an experience that words can scarcely capture.

March and April are popular times to visit Japan as the weather is mild and the onset of the cherry blossom season draws many visitors to these various locations. By mid-march, you can see the budding blooms on the trees, signalling the beginning of the Hanami season, one of the best times to visit Japan.

How Long Do Cherry Blossoms Last in Japan?

Typically, cherry blossoms in Japan grace the landscape for approximately two weeks, spanning from the beginning of their bloom to their peak bloom. If you are venturing outside of peak bloom times, there are still opportunities to witness early blossoms in southern regions such as Kawazu on the Izu Peninsula and Atami City from January to February. For those seeking later blooms, colder areas like Sendai and Hokkaido offer cherry blossom viewing from April to May.

Early Blossoms (January-February): In the regions located south of Tokyo, cherry blossoms can begin blooming as early as January. Kawazu town, situated on the Izu Peninsula coast, approximately three hours away from Tokyo, boasts a unique variety of cherry tree called Kawazu-zakura, which blooms nearly a month earlier than the typical cherry blossoms. Another option is Atami City, just about an hour and a half from Tokyo. Here, Atami-zakura blooms alongside a tranquil stream, also appearing about a month earlier than the average Japanese cherry blossoms. 

Later Blossoms (April-May): In the cooler northern regions of Japan, cherry blossom season tends to unfold later compared to other parts of the country. For example, in Sendai, located in northeastern Japan, the sakura typically begin to bloom towards the end of March. The final cherry blossoms of the season typically grace Hokkaido towards the latter part of April.

Cherry Blossom Season in Japan 2025

Just a few days ago, on February 27, 2025, the Japan Meteorogical Corporation released their 6th forecast of 2025 Cherry Blossoms bloom periods.

This year, nationwide, bloom season is starting later than usual due to warmer temperatures after winter dormancy. This acceleration in bud growth, particularly in Northern Japan, is expected to lead to earlier-than-normal blooms to compensate for the late start.

Both Eastern and Western Japan are nearing their bloom periods, possibly earlier than anticipated if the warm weather persists. A recent cool spell had initially delayed bloom expectations by approximately five days in these regions. The weather has been fluctuating from normal to above-average temperatures since last October, potentially pushing back the end of winter dormancy by a few to ten days, impacting the cherry blossom bloom timing.

Despite the delayed start, the forecast suggests that full bloom might occur on time or even slightly earlier, thanks to the expected warmer weather in the upcoming weeks. In Northern Japan, the influence of an unusually warm early winter is anticipated to bring an earlier bloom period, particularly with even warmer weather expected in April.

My Personal Recommendation of 5 Immensely Enchanting Places Where You’ll Experience the Best Cherry Blossoms in Japan

While the above chart provides a good guide to destinations as well as when to visit them, just keep in mind that most flowers usually take a week to reach full bloom once flowering has begun and that full bloom also lasts around a week. You may wish to travel between the many locations to experience a variety of features. The stone path runs along a canal, lined with hundreds of cherry blossom trees. The walk takes about thirty-minutes to complete. I cannot recommend this destination enough.

In addition, Philosopher’s Path is close to other historic sites such as the Heian Shrine, the Golden Pavilion as well as the city’s historic flea markets. It’s white facade sending glimmers into the distance. During Hanami, the cherry blossoms are ever more inviting.
